What can I tell about Venice?

That it's the perfect place for lovers? Yes, it may be...But you don't have to be in love to enjoy this place.

Situated in the region of Veneto in the northeast of Italy, Venice is one of the most visited cities in the country.

Forget about cars, buses and traffic, Venice is dominated by the vaporetti, the only mean of transport.

The city is divided into five quarters (sestieri): Cannareggio, Castello, San Marco, Dorsoduro, San Polo and Santa Croce; and is full of canals and bridges.

What's the best way of visiting Venice? Just lose yourself in the back lanes and canals. Don't buy a map - do it only if you want to keep it as a souvenir. It's almost imposible to follow it anyway… The city is perfectly sign posted, so it's very easy to go from one point to the other.

Go to St Mark's Square (Piazza di San Marco) for a coffee, the most popular place there, and then go into St Mark's Basilica ( Basilica di San Marco )…And if you are lucky you can see from above, a city flooded by hide tides, known as acque alta. This is something you won't see in other places. But don't worry about that, Venetians are prepared for this event: raised walkways (passerelle) are set up around the city, so buy a pair of gumboots and just continue sightseeing!!!!

Ther place that I loved when I was there was the Rialto Bridge (Ponte di Rialto). Make sure to enjoy a gondola rides across the Grand Canal (Canal Grande) - chip in with a groupd of friends to save a few euros.

If you can, get there in time for "Carnevale", the "Venezia Film Festival", or the "Biennale - Contemporary Art". Venice lights up even more when shes in festival mode...
